Let’s Explore Leicester: Queens Rd Edition
Written by Alice Warburton
Lockdown (again) in only in a few days’ time. Everything will close: bookshops, coffee shops, clothing stores, so you definitely need to get out in your last few days of freedom. Why go far when you have it all on your doorstep, so close to your university and accommodation?

15 minutes away from both City accommodations, and 10 minutes from our University, Queens Road is the perfect stroll out to clear your head. This local beehive has practically everything you could possibly need: music, books, bakeries, cake shops, computer repairs, hardware stores, even a local Sainsbury’s. There’s no way I could recommend and describe everything, so here are my top 3 shops on this road that are definitely worth a pre-lockdown wander.
1. Fresco eatery
Authentic Italian cuisine, a dash of delicious smoothies and mouth-watering desserts. What’s not to like? Fresh pasta, fresh pizza, and an array of tasty toppings for both – you can’t complain. The décor inside is picture perfect: beautiful flowers, gorgeous greenery, and did I mention how super friendly the staff are? Definitely a destination to bring your bubble too and take a few pics: you’re going to want to remember this! Did I mention that you can order on Deliveroo too?
2. Age UK Bookshop

A lover of books? A lover of music? A lover of quirky items? You’ve found the right place. Yes, I know this is called a ‘bookshop’, but don’t let that fool you. You can get great deals on Nintendo games, Xbox and PlayStation games, DVDs and CDs. The listing of books is extensive too (did someone say cheap £1.50 fiction?), and I bet you can find course books in here somewhere – I know I got a great deal on mine! Once you step in, you’re sure to find something quirky that catches your eye…from vintage camera’s, to cute crockery. Bargains galore!

3. Minus 14 Dessert Parlour
I quite literally cannot think of anything better than ice cream – it’s good anytime, anywhere, not just a Sundae. Good job this place is open, 8-10:30am and 2-6pm, and is looking to expand into home deliveries over lockdown. Choose from a delectable pre-picked menu (Zuma: crumbled biscoff base, vanilla gelato, toffee popcorn, biscoff biscuit and sauce, for example), or build your own, with tonnes of toppings, vegan and gluten free choices too. Sit in one of the pastel decorated window swings, tuck in whilst sharing a table inside with a friend or take out – you choose! And with the menu expanding constantly, this is certainly one to put on your watchlist.
