Lockdown: Leicester students seek weed party despite new rules

Written by Toby Cray

On Friday 6th November, a group of students knocked on another student’s door looking for a party in student accommodation, on Oadby grounds.

They were all holding alcohol and had a zip lock bag of weed.

The third-year student at Leicester University, who wants to stay anonymous, stated:

“When they started going downstairs, they put the lights on, and I saw a full zip lock bag of weed. Then I realised they smelled of weed.”

This comes the day after a new nationwide lockdown has been introduced, whilst the university has a rolling seven-day average of 6 new coronavirus cases per day, up to the 10th November.

The student describes the events that evening by stating:

“People just knocked on my door and when I opened there was quite a large group of boys and girls.”

Adding: “They asked me if that’s the flat with party tonight and I said no.

“They asked me if I knew where the Lasdun party was but of course I didn’t know the answer. They said sorry and invited me to join if I wanted to.”

A university spokesman responded to this incident by stating:

“It is of critical importance that all members of the University community work together for the safety and wellbeing of our students and staff, acting in accordance with UK government guidelines.”

Adding: “Our conduct team is working closely with Security and Accommodation Service staff at the university to ensure students found in breach of our rules are appropriately reprimanded. Breaches include mixing households, and possessing or supplying controlled substances. Temporary suspension orders have been issued to students who have contravened regulations.”

One first-year student, who wants to remain anonymous, believes that students haven’t been partying much since the new lockdown saying: “I’ve only heard of one party, but that’s all.”

The third-year student observed: “a few girls were drinking from the same bottle.

“So that is it for social distancing and national lockdown I guess.”

Adding: “Especially since there is a self-isolating label on my door”
